This event is part of the UK/Australia Season.
The UK/Australia Season is a major new cultural exchange celebrating the diverse and innovative artist communities and cultural sectors of each nation. A collaboration between the British Council and the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, The Season is a vibrant programme spanning theatre, film, visual arts, dance, design, architecture, music, literature, higher education and a public engagement programme.
Designed to strengthen and build cultural connections, the Season theme is “Who Are We Now?” and will reflect on our history, explore our current relationship, and imagine our future together. The Season launched in both countries in September 2021.
Overview
In Rewards for the Tribe, five performers wrestle with the archetype of divine geometry expressed in Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, while interacting with subverted geometric forms in an environment that is both playful and uncompromising—whimsical set and costume designs by Jonathon Oxlade both reference and topple the idealistic forms found in Mondrian’s 20th century minimalist Colour Composition Series. As images of so-called perfection collapse, bend, and crumple in an unpredictable dance between the ensemble and pliable objects, what is revealed is the need for collaboration, creativity, and the time-honoured ritual of image making to make sense of a world that is wonky.
A meditation on acceptance, Rewards for the Tribe is about seeing the beauty in things as they are.
About the artist
Chunky Move creates bold, visually striking and genre-defying dance works. These works are experiments that merge the body with other forms, explore new ideas and materials, and respond to different spaces and contexts. Chunky Move plays a crucial role in driving the artform of dance forward in Australia and beyond. Artists and audiences are at the heart of the company, expressed in its program of major works, commissions, residencies, workshops and public classes. Chunky Move aims to increase the visibility of contemporary dance as an everyday artform.
Restless Dance Theatre is Australia’s leading dance theatre company working with young people with and without disability to collaboratively create outstanding inclusive dance theatre informed by disability. The company presents unexpectedly real dance theatre works in multiple mediums to diverse audiences. Led by Artistic Director Michelle Ryan, Restless creates high quality real, raw and uninhibited dance theatre. The company has mounted over 30 major productions and many community workshop programs. Restless artists enliven and diversify Australian dance, creating original work that extends the definition of what dance is.
