Chancellor Rishi Sunak is due to hand down the 2021 Budget on 3rd March, twelve months after the last Budget in March 2020. A year on, following the enormous economic and social impacts of COVID-19, unprecedented Government spending and the UK’s official departure from the EU, the UK Government is facing a complex set of challenges including driving economic recovery, recouping public finances and shaping the UK’s new place and sovereignty in a post-Brexit, post-pandemic economy.
In a globalised world, where different countries have been impacted by the pandemic in widely divergent ways, the UK Budget will need to meet both the short-term needs of Britain’s economy as well as make far-reaching strategic choices on the shape of its recovery.
In this session, we’ll hear from our expert panel of speakers on:

About our speakers:
Dame DeAnne Julius DCMG, CBE, is an international economist who was a founder member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee. She has chaired the Council of Chatham House and University College London (UCL).
She holds a Ph.D in economics from the University of California and her early career was with the World Bank where she worked on Asia and East Africa. She subsequently became chief economist at Shell and then at British Airways. More recently Dame DeAnne has been a non-executive director on the corporate boards of BP, Roche, Deloitte, Lloyds Bank, Serco and Jones Lang LaSalle.
She has also served on the advisory boards of Temasek, the China Investment Corporation, the Chatham House Panel of Senior Advisors and Rock Creek Global, a Washington based investment firm. She is a dual UK/US citizen.
Bronwyn Curtis OBE, Non-Executive Director of the Office of Budget Responsibility
Bronwyn Curtis OBE is an economist whose career spans both the financial markets and the media. She is on the Board of the UK Office of Budget Responsibility and her other roles include Chair of JPMorgan Asia Growth and Income plc and a Non-Executive Director of Pershing Square Holdings plc.
Bronwyn’s executive roles have included Head of Global at HSBC Bank plc, Managing Editor and Head of European Broadcast at Bloomberg LP, Chief Economist of Nomura International, and Global Head of Foreign Exchange and Fixed Income Strategy at Deutsche Bank. She has also worked as a consultant for the World Bank and UNCTAD.
Ruth Gregory, Senior UK Economist, Capital Economics
Ruth Gregory has over 10 years’ experience analysing the UK economy, having worked as an economist at the CBI, Office for Budget Responsibility and HM Treasury.
Ruth regularly presents to clients on the economic and financial market outlook and comments on economic developments in the media. She holds an undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Bath.
